Cardiology

The Department of Cardiology provides a wide range of cardiac diagnostic services for all age groups ranging from neonates to geriatrics.

Primary care physicians or Cardiologists may refer patients to the Department of Cardiology for diagnostic testing. Please familiarize yourself with the procedures and tests available. Primary care physicians should consult a staff cardiologist if they require more information on the utilization of a procedure for a particular patient.

Ordering cardiology procedures

All orders for cardiology tests must be in writing. For in-patients and patients in the outpatient offsites, the unit clerks will enter these orders into the hospital computer system. Arrangements for scheduling an outpatient from an offsite must be made by calling (718) 226-9490, Monday–Friday between 8am -  4pm.

Diagnostic tests performed

  1. EKG (ECG) — Electrocardiograms, routine 12 lead ECGS are performed and interpreted by a staff cardiologist.

  2. Signal Average EKG Testing — This is a computer recording of multiple heart beats that are superimposed on each other for the purpose of anlayzing heart rhythm disorders.

  3. Echo with Dopler — Color Doppler, pulsed wave Doppler and continuous wave Doppler are all used in the evaluation of blood flow through the heart. All Doppler procedures are saved on videotape for interpretation and later viewing.

  4. Transesophageal Echocardiography — TEE enables echographic visualization of the heart and aorta from the level of the esophagus and stomach via a transducer mounted on a flexible endoscope inserted esophageally.

  5. Regular Stress Test — Cardiac stress testing is used to evaluate myocardial response to various, controlled levels of exercise. Patients are closely monitored during exercise and changes in heart rhythms and rate are recorded.

  6. Stress Thallium — This testing is done under a joint Radiology/Cardiology protocol. The patient is given an I.V. of 5% Dextrose in water prior to the stress (exercise) portion of the test. Before completion of the exercise, thallium is injected the I .V. After completion of monitored exercise in Cardiology, the patient is transported back to Nuclear Medicine for Gamma Camera photography. Reporting of results and interpretation is usually made within 24 hours for Stress Thallium Tests.

  7. Persantine/Dobutamine Thallium Stress Test — This test is used in non-ambulatory patients who are physically unable to use a treadmill or perform other physical exercises. Persantine/Dobutamine is used to pharmacologically stress the heart and mimic the effects of exercise- induced stress by redistributing cardiac blood flow.

I.V. access to patients is preferred prior to sending patients for thallium scans. Patients scheduled to these types of scans should be NPO from midnight the night before the testing.

  8. Exercise or Dobutamine Stress Echo

Obtaining stress test results
