Once it was considered foolhardy for Crohn's Patients to try and bear children.  Well, that's all changing.  Evidence shows that women with INFLAMMATORY BOWEL DISEASE OR “IBD” are as fertile as THE NORMAL POPULATION and can have healthy births.

Even during remission, a diagnosis of IBD does pose some increased risk of miscarriage, stillbirth, preterm birth, and lower birthweights, which is why it’s recommended that women seek care from a high-risk obstetrician. Reassuringly, the majority of births are without these complications (1).  in other cases some complications can be managed in both mother and child without longlasting impact. the scariest outcomes like fetal death and congenital anomalies are associated with uncontrolled disease

A discussion needs to take place early between a woman and her gasteroenterologist, preferably several months before conception. Counseling should also cover possible flare ups ahead.  Pregnancy and IBD tend to follow the rule of thirds.  symptoms will get better in about one third of women.  get worse in one third.   and stay the same in one third.  So if Crohn’s or colitis is well controlled at conception, there’s a two-to-one chance it will stay that way.
