Dr. Kane: Planning
Family Planning is Important to Help Ensure a Woman Does Not Get Pregnant at a Bad Time
Usually the female patient brings up the issue of pregnancy when it’s on her agenda. But counseling about family planning is really important to help insure a woman doesn’t get pregnant at a bad time, for example, when thinking about a certain medication where pregnancy is absolutely off the table. Sunanda Kane, MD, a professor of medicine at the MAYO Clinic and a clinician devoted to improving care for women with IBD, explains more on this MDTV Learning Module (2).

Family planning is something that is always on the mind of doctors caring for female patients of childbearing age. Sunanda Kane, MD, a professor of medicine at the MAYO Clinic, explained to MDTV how critical it is for women with Crohn's Disease to have the discussion with their gastroenterologist. It is particularly important to plan any pregnancies for a time when the disease is under control, and make sure that any medications a woman is on are safe for pregnancy when and if the time comes.
