MDTV on Pregnancy and Crohn's Disease
Dr. Kane: Fertility
What Is The Effect of Surgery on Fertility?
Women are very concerned that their fertility will be impaired when they have Crohn’s disease. Does it become harder to conceive with each resection or surgery? In what situations would a doctor generally advise a Crohn’s patient against getting pregnant? Sunanda Kane, MD, a professor of medicine at the MAYO Clinic and a clinician devoted to improving care for women with IBD, answers these questions and more on this MDTV Learning Module (3).

Many women are concerned that their fertility will be impaired by their Crohn’s Disease. Sunanda Kane, MD, a professor of medicine at the MAYO Clinic, explains that while the disease itself does not cause infertility, the invasive corrective surgeries that some patients undergo can affect a woman's fertility. This is because of the scar tissue build up in the area. However, this does not render a woman 100% infertile, so family planning options, including birth control, still need to be discussed with a woman's doctors.
