It is very important if a female Crohn’s patient is planning another pregnancy to insure that she is not flaring up, that she’s under control, and that her medications are not causing her side effects. Patient literacy is also important and anyone with Crohn’s Disease needs to stay updated about what new medications might be around. Gideon Koren, MD, explains more on this MDTV Learning Module (6).

It is not a secret that careful family planning is particularly important for women with an autoimmune disease, including Crohn's Disease. Flares, medications, and side effects all need to be taken into account when determining a safe time for pregnancy. Gideon Koren, MD, also explained to MDTV how critical patient literacy is. IBD patients need to stay up-to-date on new medications so that they understand their own options and can best communicate with their gastroenterologist.
