What Lupus Patients Can Expect
Women with Lupus are usually advised to give birth in a facility with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, although in most cases this is just a precaution. Under the best of circumstances, care of a newborn means sleep interruptions, fatigue, and additional stress, and some women will experience disease flares after delivery. Experts suggest that Lupus patients give birth in a facility with a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a precaution. Even after their high-risk pregnancies have come to term, new mothers with Lupus still have more obstacles to face. Like any women in the postpartum period, there are new challenges and additional stress that come with having a newborn, but on top of that there is a risk of disease flares. Support from both their family and their medical team is key.
