Many women with Rheumatoid Arthritis, or RA, experience an improvement in their symptoms during pregnancy. However, the disease is also known to have what is called a "rebound effect" where symptoms come back and can even worsen in the postpartum period. This, coupled with the fatigue and stress of having a newborn, can be challenging. John J. Cush, MD, Director of Clinical Rheumatology at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, and Megan E.B. Clowse, MD, MPH, Duke University Rheumatologist and Researcher, talked to MDTV about how they support their RA patients during the postpartum period. Many times experience rheumatologists can almost predict who is going to experience the rebound effect based on their past treatment and disease control, so doctor-patient communication is key to ensuring that postpartum RA patients are prepared. In addition, discussions about breastfeeding and future family planning should take place in order to find the best treatment options for the new mother.
