Select Experts are welcome to apply and participate in the MDTV Broadcast Phenomenon, including being a guest on the MDTV Pain Management Show Special and providing the community with MDTV Pain Management Medical Messages throughout the year.

BACKGROUND RESEARCH FACTS
• Chronic pain affects nearly 100 million Americans and costs the U.S. up to $635 billion per year
to treat (according to the Institute of Medicine).
• Low back pain represents about 28 percent of all causes of pain in the U.S. followed by headache
or migraines, and neck pain. Other pain sources may be arthritis, neuropathy, cancer and
autoimmune disorders.
• Chronic pain occurs because damaged or diseased nerve cells send inappropriate messages to the
brain. Although there may not be a threat to the body, the nerve pathways say there is.
• Chronic pain sufferers are stifled by their condition. It affects every aspect of their lives.
• Some treatments like massage, heat or cold compresses and acupuncture may ease the pain but
the relief is temporary. Integrative therapies are used to promote healing and enhance results of
medical treatments.
• OTC medications such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs may help with arthritis type
symptoms but for chronic pain narcotics work best. They are regulated and prescribed because of
the potential dangerous side effects. The body develops a tolerance to the drug over time and a
higher dose is needed to achieve adequate relief.
• The goal of effective pain management is to eliminate the see saw effect of medication dosing
and create sustained pain relief or adequate control.
• Chronic pain often leads to hopelessness and depression.
• TENS or transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulators are meant to override the signals the pain
nerve channels send to the brain.
• Anesthesiologist can insert a catheter into the portion of the spinal canal called the epidural to be
used as a port to give nerve block medications.
